With so many events taking place at the fairgrounds, it is good practice to stop and take notice at what these events are trying to accomplish! Admittedly, most of the time we need to know how many man hours to schedule in order to make the event happen, however, we’ve recently realized that once in a while we should “stop and smell the roses,” so-to-speak.
We did this last week during the CFEC Job Fair and we were blown away.
The Central Florida Employment Council (CFEC) and the Christian HELP Foundation organize a Job Fair every other month; their goal is to connect employers in the community with qualified candidates. They offer a plethora of services such as resume and interview help, job search seminars, even support groups focused on getting through the hump of job loss.
Since 1994 they have connected over 100,000 people with jobs, given away over 13 million pounds of food to families in need, and given away $30 million+ in free services to Central Florida Families. Their reach, and the work it takes to make this happen, was evident in the few minutes we spent in the building perusing the companies onsite looking to hire.
The organizers of the event include Dick Wilson, one of the founders of Christian HELP, who explained that they have been organizing the job fair at the Central Florida Fairgrounds for over 10 years. He also divulged a fun piece of information: Florida’s Governor has been declaring the month of September as Workforce Development Month since 1994 when Governor Chiles was in office. Governor Scott made this declaration as well, just in time for the 15th Annual Governor’s Job Fair last week.
